(san proper’s ‘it ate my quarter’ mix)
A hugely exciting prospect from Perlon this week,
delivering a doublepack of fresh-off-the-press
Villalobos rhythms backed with remixes from San
Proper and the mighty Shackleton returning a favour.
Ricardo’s run of form recently has been something
to behold, from the all-slaying Fabric mix came the
incredible Sei Es Drum series, which for our money
was worth every (slightly overpriced) penny, and
then the mind bogglingly simple but hugely effective
‘Enfants’, leaving us at this particular junction with
‘minimoonstar’.
The track follows Villalobos’ perfected recipe of tricky
tripping percussive shuffles and deeply padded basses
only this time the mood is far more humid and ominous,
with drifting synth washes and an expert application of
field recordings and found sounds adding layers of
depth and differing reverb spaces for another very
special Villalobos experience. If that hasn’t bought you
in already, check for the Shackleton remix on the flip,
seeing the Skull Disco caretaker moving deeper into
Berlin techno territory in his own unique style, retaining
his signature percussive pallette, but streamlining his
rhythms in line with his current city of residence, and
dipping his kickdrums in some special bass sauce to
make for a comfortingly claustrophobic bass pressure
that’s just totally immense. That’s not to mention the
queasy chord arrangement lurking in the aether
somewhere above which finally seals the track as an
inimitable Shackleton classic.
Jeez, we haven’t even got onto the second disk yet!
The second platter features Villalobos attempting the
aural equivalent of alchemy going from the title ‘electonic
water’, with the man providing another stunning rhythm
advancement, manufacturing a fluid beat pattern of such
intricate and organically complex detail we wonder if the
man is actaully some sort of cyborg. San Proper takes the
controls on the final cut with his remix of ‘Electonic water’,
providing a less exciting but solid container for Ricardo’s
trickling rhythms and making the track far more functional
for those that need it.
Absolutely sick EP, very highly recommended!
